LSVT LOUD for LIFE Mini Series #3 - What Happens in a LOUD for LIFE Class?
If you’ve completed LSVT LOUD voice treatment programme for Parkinson’s, you may be wondering what a LOUD for LIFE class actually involves.
In this post we explain what typically happens during a session and how these classes help people continue practising the skills developed during LSVT LOUD therapy.
If you’re new to LOUD for LIFE, you can read our first post explaining what the programme is here.
You can also read our previous article about who can attend LOUD for LIFE classes here.
What Happens During a LOUD for LIFE Class?
Each LOUD for LIFE session follows a familiar structure that builds on the exercises participants learned during their LSVT LOUD therapy programme.
The first part of the session focuses on practising the core daily voice exercises from LSVT LOUD. These exercises help reinforce the use of a strong, clear voice. During this part of the class we sometimes incorporate additional motor or thinking tasks, encouraging participants to stay loud while moving, concentrating or completing simple activities. Practising voice in this way helps people apply their skills in situations that feel closer to everyday life.
The second part of the session becomes more activity-based and communication focused. Participants practise speaking tasks that encourage conversation, thinking and interaction while continuing to use their loud voice. Activities may involve memory, general knowledge, discussion or everyday communication scenarios.
Sometimes sessions are organised around a theme, which makes the activities more engaging and helps create opportunities for natural conversation within the group. At times the group works together as a whole, and in some activities we may use smaller breakout rooms so participants can practise communicating more directly with one another.
Activities Designed to Support Different Abilities
Each activity in our LOUD for LIFE classes is carefully planned so that people with different communication styles and cognitive abilities can take part comfortably.
Some participants enjoy preparing something to read aloud from home, such as a short article or a topic they are interested in. Others prefer activities that involve thinking and responding in the moment.
Because the classes are led by a speech therapist, activities can be adapted so that everyone can participate at a level that feels manageable while still practising the important voice skills developed during therapy.
Many participants find that combining voice exercises with thinking, movement and conversation helps them feel more confident using their voice in everyday situations.
